UBT's Sustainability Practices

At the University of Business and Technology (UBT), we are committed to shaping a sustainable future through meaningful actions, impactful education, and responsible governance. Our sustainability efforts are aligned with global best practices and frameworks, including the QS Sustainability Ranking structure. By integrating sustainability into our operations, education, research, and community engagement, UBT strives to create positive environmental, social, and economic outcomes for our students, staff, and the wider community. We believe that true leadership in education comes not only from academic excellence but also from a deep commitment to fostering a more just, resilient, and sustainable world.

This webpage showcases UBT's comprehensive sustainability initiatives across three key pillars: Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance. Each pillar reflects our proactive policies, student engagement activities, research initiatives, community outreach programs, and governance structures dedicated to sustainability and ethical leadership. Through transparency, innovation, and collaboration, UBT continues to strengthen its role as a catalyst for sustainable development, empowering future leaders to drive change in their professions and communities.

At UBT, we recognize that safeguarding our planet requires proactive measures that address both our immediate operations and long-term environmental goals. The Environmental Impact pillar reflects our dedication to reducing our ecological footprint while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility across our campus community. Through comprehensive policies, sustainable practices, and transparent reporting, we are actively working to minimize carbon emissions, promote resource efficiency, and embed environmental awareness into every aspect of university life.

From climate action initiatives and sustainable procurement to environmental education and research, our efforts aim to create a lasting positive impact on the environment. By engaging students, staff, and stakeholders in these initiatives, we strive to not only reduce our environmental footprint but also empower our community to become advocates for a more sustainable and resilient future.

UBT is committed to embedding environmental sustainability into the core of its operations, policies, and campus culture. Through strategic initiatives and targeted actions, we work to address climate change, promote responsible consumption, and ensure that our investments and procurement practices reflect our environmental values. By continuously assessing and enhancing the sustainability literacy of our students and staff, we foster a community that is not only aware of environmental challenges but actively engaged in creating solutions.

Our approach to environmental sustainability is comprehensive — from implementing climate action policies and promoting sustainable procurement to joining global initiatives like Race to Zero. These efforts demonstrate UBT's determination to lead by example and inspire meaningful environmental change both within and beyond our university.

UBT is committed to minimizing its environmental impact and actively addressing climate change through the implementation of robust sustainability and climate action policies. Recognizing the importance of preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable development, UBT has established a framework to guide its operations and ensure accountability in its environmental stewardship. By assessing students' sustainability literacy, UBT can tailor educational initiatives and programs to better equip them to become informed and engaged contributors to a sustainable future.

UBT is committed to integrating sustainability into its procurement and purchasing practices. This commitment is reflected in our policies, which prioritize environmental, social, and economic considerations in the acquisition of goods and services. Our approach aims to ensure that procurement activities support UBT's broader sustainability goals, contribute to a vibrant local economy, and adhere to the highest ethical and quality standards.

Our procurement policies emphasize several key principles. We strive to source food and drink responsibly, favoring local, seasonal products and suppliers, and ensuring that our providers comply with sustainability and health standards. We also focus on minimizing the environmental impact of our purchasing decisions, reducing waste, and promoting the use of sustainable products and packaging.

Through these policies, UBT seeks to promote transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in our procurement processes, ensuring that our purchasing decisions contribute to a more sustainable future.

UBT is committed to ensuring that its financial practices support the university's overarching sustainability objectives. While not articulated in a single "Sustainable Investment Policy," the principles of sustainable investment are embedded within our financial management framework. This approach emphasizes the effective and responsible allocation of resources, considering both financial returns and the long-term environmental and social impact of our expenditure and investment decisions.

Our policies prioritize strategic alignment of financial needs with the university's mission, promoting transparency and accountability in resource allocation. This includes evaluating capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects not only for their financial viability (e.g., ROI, NPV) but also for their contribution to the university's sustainability goals. By integrating these considerations into our financial planning and expenditure, UBT strives to optimize resource utilization and ensure long-term sustainability across all its activities.

UBT fosters a strong commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability through the active engagement of its students. The Students' Sustainability Club serves as a key platform for promoting sustainable practices and initiatives within the university and the broader community.

The club aims to achieve environmental, social, and economic goals by involving students from all colleges. It focuses on raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices among students, faculty, and staff. The club's activities include promoting environmental awareness, implementing sustainable projects, encouraging student participation, and collaborating with external organizations to support environmental initiatives.

Through the Students' Sustainability Club, UBT empowers its students to become active participants in creating a more sustainable future.

The University of Business and Technology (UBT) has taken a definitive stance on climate action by publicly pledging to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with global climate frameworks and the Saudi Vision 2030 sustainability objectives. The University of Business and Technology (UBT) is committed to fostering a healthy environment free from discrimination and harassment, ensuring that all members can work together in harmony and equality. UBT strongly prohibits all forms of discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, or disability. The university's policy applies to all UBT members, including faculty, staff, students, visitors, and adjunct professors, ensuring equality in areas such as accessibility, admission, pay-scale, gender equality, and disabilities. UBT also has a strict stance against harassment, which includes any act that offends, intimidates, or harms a person, whether it be verbal, physical, written, or social behavior.

To address and prevent harassment, UBT has established measures such as a mechanism for receiving complaints, procedures for verifying complaints while maintaining confidentiality, and the publication of these measures to raise awareness. UBT is prepared to take disciplinary action against any personnel who violate these policies, in accordance with its applicable procedures, and emphasizes that such actions do not prejudice the victim's right to file a complaint with the competent authorities. The university also provides means for submitting complaints through its website, e-mail, recorded calls, or other appropriate channels, ensuring that complaints are received and addressed in a timely manner.

UBT is committed to upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct and ensuring transparency in all its operations. This commitment includes a strict stance against bribery and corruption, which is crucial for maintaining the trust of our stakeholders and fostering a culture of integrity.

The "Employees Handbook" outlines the professional behaviors expected of all staff, emphasizing fairness and ethical practices. While the handbook may not contain a section explicitly labeled "Anti-Bribery and Corruption Policy," the principles of ethical conduct and integrity are embedded within its guidelines. These principles serve to guide employee behavior and ensure that all activities are conducted in a manner that is free from corruption.

UBT has established a formal sustainability team through Administrative Decision No. 008/24 dated March 5, 2024, which explicitly created the 'University Sustainability Project' team. This dedicated team consists of five members headed by the University President's advisor, with representation from key institutional sectors including academic affairs, planning and development, quality assurance, and facilities management. To this end, it demonstrates UBT's organizational commitment to sustainability by creating this specialized team with the sole responsibility of advancing sustainable development initiatives throughout the institution.

This sustainability team has been tasked with specific responsibilities that directly support advancing sustainable development at UBT. As outlined in the administrative decision, these responsibilities include promoting sustainable development concepts aligned with the university's vision, implementing the 'UBT GOING GREEN' initiative across campus facilities, fostering a culture of sustainability awareness within the university community, developing internal sustainability policies aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and strengthening partnerships with sustainability-focused organizations.

UBT's ethical values are deeply embedded within its strategy, demonstrating a strong commitment to principles that guide the university's operations and interactions. The 'About' section of UBT's website explicitly outlines its core values, which include integrity, alongside passion, responsibility, excellence, diversity, and creativity, all underpinned by team spirit. This commitment to integrity signifies the university's dedication to acting with dignity and honesty, adhering consistently to its ethical and professional codes, which are stated to be aligned with Islamic values. These values serve as a foundational framework, influencing decision-making processes and shaping the expected conduct of students, faculty, and staff across all university activities.

Furthermore, the emphasis on these ethical values is not merely aspirational but is actively integrated into UBT's strategic objectives and operational frameworks. The publicly accessible 'Strategy' page details the university's strategic goals, which are implicitly guided by these core values. For instance, the pursuit of academic excellence and the creation of a positive working and learning environment necessitate a foundation of integrity and ethical conduct. Similarly, UBT's commitment to partnering with the community and maintaining internationalization efforts requires transparent and ethical interactions with stakeholders. By making these strategic documents publicly available, UBT ensures transparency and allows stakeholders to understand the ethical principles that underpin the university's direction and activities.

UBT is committed to embedding its core values into the fabric of the institution by providing training at all levels of the organization. These values, which include passion, responsibility, excellence, diversity, integrity, creativity, and team spirit, are foundational to the university's mission and vision. By ensuring that all members of the university community, from leadership to staff, are trained in and understand these values, UBT aims to create a cohesive and ethical environment that fosters positive change, advancement of society, and the pursuit of the highest quality standards.

Through this comprehensive training approach, UBT seeks to cultivate a workplace where every individual acts with dignity and honesty, respects cultural diversity, and is encouraged to think creatively and work collaboratively. The emphasis on team spirit and cooperation underscores the university's belief in the power of collective effort to achieve its strategic goals and contribute meaningfully to the community. Ultimately, by prioritizing value-based training, UBT is not only shaping its present but also investing in a future where its values drive its success and societal impact.

UBT has established a comprehensive framework to address ethical matters through a multi-tiered committee structure, as outlined in administrative decision number 24/0102. At the apex of this structure is the Supreme Disciplinary Committee, which plays a critical role in overseeing ethical conduct across the institution. This committee, chaired by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, is responsible for adjudicating serious offenses, reviewing appeals from lower disciplinary committees, and ensuring consistency in the application of disciplinary procedures.

The Supreme Disciplinary Committee's oversight extends to monitoring the activities of student disciplinary committees within colleges, postgraduate studies, and student affairs. This involves conducting workshops, informational meetings, and developing standardized forms to maintain a unified approach to addressing student misconduct, whether academic or behavioral. By centralizing the handling of severe ethical breaches and maintaining a supervisory role over other disciplinary bodies, the Supreme Disciplinary Committee ensures that UBT's ethical standards are upheld and that disciplinary actions are applied fairly and consistently throughout the university.

UBT is committed to providing a fair and transparent process for its staff to address employment-related concerns. The 'Complaints, Appeals and Grievance (Faculty & Staff) Policy' outlines the procedures for faculty and staff members to raise and address complaints, appeals, and grievances. This policy ensures that staff can voice their concerns about employment matters, working conditions, or any related issues, with the assurance that their concerns will be handled impartially and in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.

To assure confidentiality, UBT’s policy emphasizes that all information related to complaints, grievances, and appeals will be treated with strict confidentiality. The university prohibits any form of retaliation against employees who raise concerns in good faith, ensuring that staff can report issues without fear of reprisal. Furthermore, records of all complaints, appeals, and grievances are maintained securely and separately from the employee's personnel file, with appropriate access management to protect the privacy of all parties involved.

The University of Business and Technology (UBT) Student Council serves as a vital platform for student representation, engagement, and empowerment within the academic and social fabric of the university. Acting as a bridge between the student body and university administration, the Council plays a central role in advocating for student interests, supporting extracurricular initiatives, and enhancing the overall campus experience. By encouraging dialogue, teamwork, and leadership, the Council helps cultivate a culture of civic responsibility, mutual respect, and positive student participation in shaping university life.

Rooted in principles of fairness, inclusivity, and accountability, the Student Council is dedicated to developing well-rounded student leaders who contribute meaningfully to their peers and the broader community. Through organizing educational, cultural, and service-oriented activities, the Council fosters student talents, promotes innovation, and supports UBT’s mission of academic excellence and social responsibility. It also provides students with a voice in university affairs, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and networks necessary for future leadership roles in society.
